Port of Menteith

Location

Port of Menteith is approximately 17 miles north west of Stirling. It is situated around of the Lake of Menteith (the only ‘Lake’ in Scotland) and is overlooked by the Menteith Hills which mark the southern edge of the Highland Boundary Fault.

Population

The population is now around 280 having declined significantly over the last century with the move away from agrarian employment.

Housing

Most of the housing is owner occupied with a small number of tied houses, holiday homes and local authority housing. There is thought to be a shortage of affordable housing for younger residents. There are also a number of properties in the private rental sector.

Local Economy and Housing

Most of the working population travel out of the area to work in Stirling and Glasgow. There are however still a small number of jobs in farming, the Lake of Menteith fisheries, and by the estates of Cardross, Malling, Arntomie and Rednock.
