Park Authority Urges Safety on Water 25/06/2009
25 June 2009
Loch
Lomond & The Trossachs
National Park Authority today (Thursday 25 June) urged water
enthusiasts to think about their safety and that of others whilst visiting the
Park over the summer months.
With forecasters
predicating a warmer summer than usual, it is anticipated there were will be
record numbers of people enjoying the lochs and rivers in Scotland’s first National Park.
Since the start of the
year the National Park Authority has already responded to 48 calls for
assistance. This follows a total of 120 responses carried out by the organisation
in 2008.
Many more operations have
been carried out by the Loch Lomond Rescue Boat, a voluntary service, and emergency
services which are the main organisations responsible for safety on the water.
National Park Authority Chief
Executive, Fiona Logan, is anxious
to ensure there are no more tragic accidents on the water.
She said: “We are gearing
up for a significant influx of visitors with predictions of a glorious summer
and more people expected to holiday at home this year.
“However safety is
paramount, especially on the water. Water sports are amongst the most popular
activities where people can sometimes underestimate the dangers.
“We are urging people to
act responsibly so everyone can make the most of all that Scotland’s first National Park has
to offer and we don’t want a fun day out to turn into a tragedy.”
The National Park
Authority is urging water users to follow these simple guidelines:
- Always wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid, regardless of how experienced you may be
- Never mix water sports or swimming with alcohol
- Ensure your vessel is in good working order
- Act responsibly
- Check weather forecasts before you set off
- Familiarise yourself with Loch Lomond Registration and Navigation Byelaws
