Transport and Travel
Cars are a major contributor to carbon emissions in the National Park. 79% of visitors arrive here by car and 73% explore the area by car.
Of the six categories of emissions that we’re aiming to reduce, this is the largest at 34%.
Challenge
Part of the reason for the volume of cars is because large parts of the National Park can’t be reached any other way. This also means that access to the Park isn’t equal for everyone.
Public transport across the country and within the National Park is designed more for residents than visitors. Although many local people, particularly young people, don’t feel current transport services meet their needs either.
Tackling the lack of choice in rural public transport is a crucial part of becoming a Net Zero National Park and becoming Carbon Negative. It will also provide more opportunities for everyone to enjoy the National Park.
Solution
To reduce the emissions caused by cars we need to make it easier and more attractive for people to travel to, from and around the National Park.
Services need to be more joined up so they’re more convenient, priced in a way which makes them more attractive and promoted so people are encouraged to use them.
This requires a ‘whole system’ approach which will involve several organisations working together to make it happen.
Goal
The goal is for there to be a National Park transport system for visitors and residents that is efficient, inclusive and low carbon.

- Develop a new strategic transport partnership approach
- Make sustainable travel choices more attractive
- Improve travel routes and services
- Provide a high-quality recreational path network
Progress Update
Steps are already being taken to deliver against these goals.
Work is currently underway to transform Tarbet Pier Picnic site, West Loch Lomond, into a low-carbon destination.
