Climate Change Risk and Opportunities Assessment

What does the Climate Change Risk and Opportunities Assessment Report mean for the National Park?

Where are we now?

The National Park Partnership Plan 2024-2029 sets out a long-term vision for the future of the National Park and the steps we will take together to tackle the twin crises of climate and nature. This report is part of showing us what that means. It gives us:

  • Localised climate change projections for the National Park
  • A detailed analysis of the risks faced by the National Park due to these climate changes

The challenge

Adaptation is the adjustment in economic, social, or natural systems in response to climatic change, to limit harmful consequences and exploit beneficial opportunities.

It is distinct from work to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, the drivers of climate change, to avoid further negative changes to our climate. That work is known as Mitigation.

We must work on both Mitigation and Adaptation as the legacy of past and current greenhouse gas emissions means that climate change over the next few decades is now unavoidable.

This report details the vulnerabilities the National Park is facing and must respond to in order to adapt. The report:

  • Identifies the primary climate change hazards in the National Park
  • Maps concentrations of climate change risks in the National Park
  • Identifies a small number of opportunities associated with a changing climate in the National Park

What next?

We must now work with Delivery Partners across the National Park to address the risks. The resulting actions can be embedded in existing adaptation plans and programmes of work, making the most of our collective impact. Where something is not already in place this can be developed.
